KIDS for the BAY collaborates with teachers to connect students with nature, inspire environmental action, turn students on to science, and create lasting impact.
Second grade students at Verde Elementary School explored Wildcat Creek, which flows past their school, and discussed the importance of healthy waterways, and how they are all connected to the nature around them as part of a KIDS for the BAY- Richmond Outdoors Coalition partnership program.
KftB Educator Sakshi Srivastava met with Student Ambassadors from Madera Elementary School in El Cerrito to learn more about their experiences with our Watershed Action Program. In conversations with Ms. Sakshi, Madera Student Ambassadors shared how their KftB program has impacted their journey as Environmentalists and leaders. Students also shared their concerns about the environment, as well as what gives them hope.
KIDS for the BAY (KftB) is excited to be a bigger part of the solution to reducing plastic pollution and microplastics in 2024. Our young Environmentalists have recorded the types and amounts of plastic pollution collected in school neighborhood, creek, bay and ocean cleanups for many years. Now we’re going a step further by tracking the brands of plastic trash they collect, as part of a Plastic Pollution Audit based on the Break Free From Plastic Guidelines. By sharing our students’ data with Earth Island Institute, our fiscal sponsor, we are helping to bring the first major lawsuit of its kind against the biggest plastic polluting corporations.
The holidays are here, and everyone is excited for this special time of celebration and connecting with friends and loved ones! Unfortunately, it’s also a season full of excess, waste and–you guessed it–plastic. On these days of joy, we hope to fill up our hearts and our homes with laughter and love. At KIDS for the BAY Summer Camp, our campers spend every day outdoors exploring nature. Their hands-on investigations and moments of awe and wonder are led by KIDS for the BAY Educators with a strong passion for the environment and for sharing its beauty and value with others. The fresh waters flowing through our camp locations in unique creek, pond and lake habitats provide transformative settings that foster deep nature connections and an appreciation for the natural world in all our campers. Art is an important educational tool that helps students develop lifelong skills. Art increases cognitive ability, encourages creativity and helps students develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Students can use art as a tool to help them understand complex topics, and to connect with peers and with their community.
KIDS for the BAY recently launched a new program, The Richmond Parks and Watershed Rangers Program, to help students create public art installations to brighten parks and greenspaces in their community.
